An interview with Ambros Nussbaumer

A Simplon fan for 50+ years

Ambros Nussbaumer, former community doctor from Mellau, is 85 years old and has been a big fan of Simplon for over 50 years. In 1970, he bought his first Simplon road bike. Today, he rides the new Inissio Pmax. As we handed it over to him, we asked him: What do you like best about road cycling? What has changed for you since you started cycling? And why Simplon?

I am convinced that my regular bicycle training has enabled me to considerably exceed this limit – after all, I turned 85 last year.

Since when have you been road cycling, and what motivated you to take up this sport?

I started riding road bikes when I was about 35 years old. It was about the health aspect for me. I wanted to do something for my cardiovascular system, and I started with special training. At the time, the first moon landings took place, and the astronauts started with special training too. The medical work that was done with the astronauts fascinated me. Then I took up running and finally switched over to cycling.

What has changed for you since you started regularly riding your bike?

Most importantly, I have seen that it benefits my health. Cycling is great cardiovascular training. I always ride with a heart rate monitor on and in accordance with the principles of sports medicine.

I have a genetic metabolic disorder, which would usually mean I’d have a life expectancy of between 60 and 70 years. I am convinced that my regular bicycle training has enabled me to considerably exceed this limit – after all, I turned 85 last year.

What do you like best about this sport?

I'm a movement person by nature. I like to move, and I love speed. Less so by car, but speed combined with physical effort is simply something I enjoy.

How long have you been riding a Simplon bike?

I bought my first Simplon bike in the early 70s – and now, I’m at my fourth Simplon road bike.

They simply always had the best bikes. I looked at several brands, and Simplon’s bikes impressed me the most. And the service and everything around it has always worked well, too.

Why Simplon?

They simply always had the best bikes. I looked at several brands, and Simplon’s bikes impressed me the most. And the service and everything around it has always worked well, too. My fellow cyclists use other brands, some of which they had more difficulties with. I believe that I ride best on a Simplon bike – it just suits me.

How come you decided on the Inissio Pmax?

Because of my age, I don't have the same level of physical conditioning as before, but I still want to ride mountains and routes that I used to be able to manage easily with my own strength. Now I just need a little support, and that’s just what the electric drive unit provides. I also like the design of the Inissio Pmax. It looks great.

What are your hopes for the future?

I hope that I can ride this Simplon bike without having any accidents and that I’ll enjoy it very much.

What do you wish Simplon?

That they keep their finger on the pulse of time and continue to implement great new developments.

Thanks a lot!
